Princess Royal visits and Inspects Military units

H.R.H. the Princess Royal devoted most of her morning yesterday to visist and inspections of Military units closely connected with her position as Major-Gener on the Active List in the British Army.

In the morning, accompanied by His Excellency the Governor and the Deputy Fortress Commander, and wearing the green Dress uniform of the Womans Royal Army Corps with decorations, she walked from the Convent to the Royal Signals Squadron just behind the Convent gardens.
Thers after inspecting a detachment of the Royal Signals on parade she was conducted on an inspection tour of the barracks, radio distribution studios, fortress telephone exchanges, test room and the canteen for the personnel, their wives and families, many of the latter being there to welcome the Royal visitor.
Before the Princess Royal left the squadron gave her, their Colonel in Chief a burst of hearty cheers.

H.R.H then drove to Windmill Hill flats with H.E the governor to visit the W.R.A.C detatchment. On arrival she was received by the Commander Royal Artillery, Brigadier A.L. Mathews,
Lt Col N.W. Metcalf RA. Officer Commanding 54 A.A Regiment RA, Major E. Askham W.R.A.C Officer in charge W.R.A.C 94 (New Zealnd) H.A.A. Battery.

As H.R.H stepped up onto the dias, the band of the 1st Bn the Duke of Wellingtons Regiment played the first portion of the national Anthem when the detatchment gave the Royal Salute and the Royal Standard was unfurled at the top of the flagstaff.
After inspecting the W.R.A.C detatchment and pausing for a short while to speak with some of the woman on parade, asking them about their period of service etc, the detatchment marched past Her Royal Highness in column of route, finally coming to back to their original position to give three cheers for their Controller Commandant.

After inspecting the Barracks and other sections the Princess Royal drove to the Gun positions at Windmill Hill and was shown operational equipment including radar and other instruments.
Subsequently, at Europa after meeting and chatting with some members of the W.R.A.C association H.R.H unveiled and named as Princess Royal Block the new W.R.A.C building which is nearing completion.
After these military functions H.R.H lunched with the Officers of the Royal Artillery at their mess at Bleak House Europa, later driving back to the Convent via Europa Point and Catalan Bay.

In the afternoon Her Royal Highness attended a garden party given by the Govenor at the Convent for the officials and members of Gibralter Children,s Welfare Guild, the British Red Cross Society, the Society od St Vincent de Paul, the Gibralter Society for the Prevention of Blindness and the St Johns Ambulance Association, the days activities ending with a dinner at Rock Cottage as a guest of the Commander Royal Artillery and Lady Diana Matthews.
